Corin James paints the world he moves through.

A contemporary painter from Wexford, Ireland, his work grows from observation rather than theory; the people he meets, the spaces he inhabits, fragments of graffiti on a wall, a memory worth being reminded of.

For Corin, painting is first and foremost about visual impact. Not every image needs to be decoded or explained. Some paintings exist simply because they do. Their meaning reveals itself through the experience of looking, rather than through written explanation. No ‘but what does it mean?’ necessary.

As a lover of dance music and club culture, he’s witnessed live sets where a DJ seamlessly builds a tapestry of sound — layering samples from other artists, original sounds, snippets from film, and rhythms you wouldn’t expect to move to. Somehow, it all works. Corin approaches painting in much the same way. He assembles fragments of everyday life (portraits, street markings, architecture, plants) and curates them into visual compositions designed to evoke a feeling. The elements already exist in the world. The painting is where they meet.

While the work resists heavy conceptual framing, craft sits at the centre of Corin’s practice. He believes painting should ‘still impress us’. Not only through ideas, but through the skill, discipline and presence of the work itself. In a moment where contemporary art can sometimes rely more on explanation than execution, he is interested in returning attention to the image itself: the moment a viewer encounters a painting and feels its energy immediately.

Corin briefly studied Fine Art at IADT before choosing to develop his practice independently, trusting instinct and lived experience as the primary forces shaping his work. Since then, his paintings have evolved through constant observation of the world around him. He borrows vibrant influences from music, street culture, social spaces and the communities he encounters. Life-fed art.

Because of this, his work does not belong solely within traditional art institutions. Corin is as interested in the response of everyday audiences as he is in gallery contexts. Pedestrians, musicians, actors, designers and curious passersby are just as much a part of the audience as collectors or curators.

At its core, Corin’s work is about creating art that leaves an impression. The viewer encounters the work first through energy, colour and composition, before searching for explanation. The painting doesn’t arrive with instructions. Instead, artist and viewer make a small leap together: Corin assembles pieces of the world he moves through, and the audience finds their own way into it.
